A living tradition in Andalusia
There are days when the countryside paths fill with horses, carriages and families.
From different villages across Andalusia, the brotherhoods set out towards a shared destination: the shrine of El Rocío.
Music drifts through the pine forests.
Dust rises along the way, accompanying the slow movement of the day.
These are days of romería.
At Kukutana, we open the door to those who wish to understand this tradition from within, accompanying some of the brotherhoods that each year travel the paths of the Aljarafe and the edges of Doñana.
The shared journey of a romería
Romerías are one of Andalusia’s most enduring traditions, where horses, families and brotherhoods travel together along the countryside paths.
A romería is not an event.
It is a shared journey.
From early in the morning, the brotherhoods set out from their villages; some on horseback, others in carriages, many on foot.
For hours, the path becomes a place of gathering, where people sing, talk and share food under the shade of the trees.
To join a romería is to walk alongside those who live it year after year.
Experiencing a romería
Each romería begins early. Horses are prepared. Carriages are adorned. Families gather before setting out on the path.
Throughout the day, the journey moves through countryside paths, pine forests and marshlands, with guests joining on horseback, on foot or by carriage.
At the end of the day, the countryside returns to silence. What remains is the feeling of having been part of something that still lives on.
Day 1. Arrival and La Juncosilla
Arriving at Kukutana marks the beginning of the rhythm of the countryside.
In the afternoon, a first ride through La Juncosilla offers an introduction to the landscape and the surroundings of the house.
A gentle ride, on horseback or by horse-drawn carriage, through pine forests and sandy paths, to begin to understand the land from within.
A first introduction to settle in, slow down and gently ease into the experience.
Day 2. A Day at the Romería
On the second day, the romería is experienced alongside one of the local brotherhoods.
From early morning, the path fills with horses, carriages and families moving forward together.
Guests can take part in the romería on horseback, on foot or by horse-drawn carriage, becoming part of the journey.
Throughout the day, there are shared pauses, meals in the countryside, and moments of music and connection.
Day 3. Doñana National Park
On the third day, the surroundings of Doñana National Park are explored.
A landscape of marshlands, pine forests and open paths that engages all the senses.
The vastness, the light, the sounds, and the feeling of being in an almost untouched landscape make the experience both intense and hard to forget.
Midway through the day, a brief pause.
At Kukutana, a small aperitif is part of the journey—a shared drink as the landscape opens around you.
A simple moment to pause, observe and continue the journey with a different perspective.
Day 4. Farewell
The morning unfolds slowly before departure.
Time for a final walk around the house and its surroundings, and to bring the stay to a close without haste.
The farewell comes naturally, after a few days sharing life in the countryside.
With the feeling of taking something of this place back home: its way of life, its calm, and all that was shared.
Those who make the journey possible
Accompanying a tradition from within
At Kukutana, we believe traditions are only truly understood from within.
Our team has lived and worked in this region for years, building close relationships with the communities and brotherhoods that travel these paths each season.
Thanks to these relationships, some guests are invited to accompany parts of the romería, always with respect for those who keep this tradition alive.
Horses, the countryside and local culture are a natural part of life at Kukutana.
It is from this closeness that these experiences are shared.
