A LIVING TRADITION IN THE HEART OF DOÑANA
Every June, the horsemen of Almonte cross the marshes to gather the Marismeño mares that have roamed freely throughout Doñana all year round.
A centuries-old tradition that brings together nature, heritage, and community. From Kukutana, we invite you to experience the Saca de las Yeguas from within, following the rhythm of the land and sharing in the days surrounding one of Andalusia’s most remarkable traditions.
What will you experience?
The Saca de las Yeguas is more than a celebration. It is the expression of a way of life deeply rooted in the marshes of Doñana and the Marismeño horse.
Over several days, you will discover the landscapes where these horses roam freely, learn the story of a tradition passed down through generations, and experience some of its most iconic moments.
From the tranquillity of Kukutana, the experience is enriched with time to enjoy nature, share conversations around the table, and discover the territory through an authentic local perspective.
Saca de las Yeguas at Kukutana
Four days following the journey of the Marismeño mares from the marshes of Doñana to Almonte. A tradition that continues to thrive today.
Day 1: Arrival at Kukutana and First Introduction to the Landscape
Upon arriving at Kukutana in the early afternoon, you will have time to settle in and begin discovering the landscape that surrounds the house.
The afternoon offers a gentle introduction to the rhythm of the marshes, revealing the close connection between the land, the Marismeño horse, and the people who have lived in harmony with this landscape for generations.
We will set out on horseback for our first introduction to the landscape. A gentle ride through La Juncosilla dehesa, helping you read the land and prepare for the days ahead—early mornings, summer heat, and the rhythm of a tradition that has endured for generations.
Upon returning, we will share an aperitif and dinner at the house as we discover the history and meaning behind the Saca de las Yeguas.
Day 2: The Eve of the Saca
The day begins on horseback, following some of Doñana’s historic trails through landscapes that have long been part of the daily lives of horsemen, pilgrims, and the local community.
After lunch at Kukutana, we will head into the heart of the marshes. There, we will witness one of the most special moments on the eve of the Saca: the arrival of the horsemen as they gather the mares, which will spend the night resting before setting off on the following day’s journey.
The afternoon will allow us to experience this unique atmosphere firsthand and gain a deeper understanding of the human side of a tradition that has been kept alive for generations.
As the afternoon draws to a close, we will share a picnic dinner surrounded by nature, watching the marshes transform in the warm light of the setting sun.
Day 3: The Saca de las Yeguas
At dawn, we will head to the point where the yegüerizos emerge from the marshes and the route continues towards El Rocío. There, we will join them on horseback for a short section of the journey, accompanying the mares and the horsemen who have kept this tradition alive for generations.
Upon arriving in El Rocío, we will leave our horses behind and experience the unique atmosphere created as the different groups arrive. We will then continue by vehicle to the sesteo, where the mares rest during the hottest hours of the day. There, we will watch the different groups gather before, in the late afternoon, they set off once again on their journey towards Almonte.
It will be a long and demanding day, shaped by the rhythm of tradition, the heat of the Andalusian summer, and the privilege of experiencing one of Doñana’s most remarkable traditions from within.
Day 4: The Livestock Enclosure and Farewell
On our final morning, we will visit Almonte’s livestock enclosure, where the mares remain after the Saca. Following the intensity of the previous day, this is a chance to experience a quieter side of the tradition and gain a deeper understanding of the role it continues to play in the life of the local community.
As we walk through the enclosure, we will learn about the work of the horsemen who keep this tradition alive and discover the deep connection between the families of Almonte, the marshes, and the Marismeño horse.
Afterwards, we will return to Kukutana for lunch, sharing one last moment together before saying goodbye to a place that is best discovered slowly and from within.
