History of the Acebrón Palace

The Palacio del Acebrón visitor centre, located in Almonte (Huelva), is an old neoclassical palace built during the second half of the 20th century, specifically in 1961 as a private residence by Luis Espinosa Fontdevilla.

Dedicated to recreation and hunting, it became the first museum in the Doñana Natural Park in 1981. It currently houses a centre for the dissemination and knowledge of Doñana’s ethnographic heritage, where visitors can enjoy a multitude of exhibitions.

It has become one of Almonte’s top tourist destinations, which is why so many visitors stop by here during their visit to the National Park.

As a point of interest, if you visit Doñana, stop by the Palacio del Acebrón, where you will find the initials of its developer, LEF (Luis Espinosa Fontdevilla), engraved on the frontispiece of the palace and on the chimney.

In addition, there is an audiovisual room attached to the palace that was formerly a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Rocío.

Acebrón Palace: opening hours

Located in Doñana National Park, the Palacio del Acebrón is the perfect destination for visitors who want to learn more about the biodiversity and ecosystems of the area. So, if you are thinking of visiting this site, you should bear in mind that the visiting hours for the palace will depend on the season in which you plan to visit.

Access to the palace is free and you can visit it any day of the week, as it is open every day except certain public holidays. If you are planning a visit to the nature reserve and visitor centre at Palacio del Acebrón, save this article so you can check the opening hours for the time of year you are planning to visit:

  • November to January: open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • February to October: open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • From 15 June to 15 September: open on Sundays only from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • On public holidays such as 24th, 25th and 31st December, 1st, 5th and 6th January, and during the Rocío pilgrimage, the visitor centre will be closed.

Warning: As this is a free space, if you are planning a visit with your family or a group, we recommend checking availability in advance to avoid any unforeseen circumstances and to make the most of both the visit and the experience, as people usually spend up to an hour visiting the Palacio del Acebrón visitor centre.

How to get to the Acebrón Palace

Getting to the Acebrón Palace is easy and accessible, as it is located in one of the most emblematic areas of the Doñana National Park, in the province of Huelva.

It is located in the lower-middle section of the Rocina stream, on the A-483 Almonte-Matalascañas road, Acebrón lane, 6 km from La Rocina, within the national park, so the scenery you can enjoy along the way is breathtaking. Remember to enjoy it!

If you are travelling to the Acebrón Palace by car from Huelva, please note that the visitor centre is located 40 km from the city, so you should take the A-483 road towards Almonte. From the A-483 road, take the exit signposted La Rocina and El Acebrón. Once you have passed the La Rocina visitor centre, continue for seven kilometres on the H-9023 until you reach the palace car park.

If you are coming from Seville, take the A-49 towards Huelva and continue to Almonte on the A-483. And if you stay at Kukutana, you won’t have to worry about a thing! Although the easiest way to get to the Palacio del Acebrón visitor centre is by car, if you prefer, you can also take a bus from Huelva or Seville to Almonte and then take a taxi to the palace.

It is located just 6 km from the La Rocina visitor centre.
